Ignorance is your new best friend

Just because you don't like something or don't understand it, it doesn't give you the right to force your views on someone else...

So, today I was listening to 'Of Mice and Men - Ben Threw' [what I've been throughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... (and a few more h's)].

My oldest sister walked in and asked: 'Do you even enjoy this music? Or do you just want to like it and impress them?' I was so angered. First off, who is 'them'?? And secondly, who am I trying to impress by listening to 'this' music. It's only you two (my other sister was present) who are here... So if I was trying to impress anyone, it surely wouldn’t be either of you.

What angered me more was when my other sister followed with: 'She just wants to be hip'… At least get the genre of stereotypical hip music correct, you ignoramus!

Honestly, it gets me so livid, especially as they are my sisters and seem to not know much about me… I mean I don't only listen to metal, or what they'd call - ‘screamo’. But do they say anything when I listen to my favourite band -
Foals??!...  No, because they accept that genre as listenable. But when it comes to music with a heavier sound than what they're used to in their closed minds, they'll have no hesitation in pointing it out.

What is it with small minded people? What is it with society's need to be so judgmental?

Listen to what you want! Like what YOU like, man.

Truthfully, I know I have a wider and more open mind set than my sisters who only hang with a certain type of people. Yeah, I'm happy I am who I am. I may be more western than many other Asians, but mate, I am more aware of the world and people than you'd think... Seriously, all I do is question human activity.

Then, there are examples like my sisters who think it is okay to go around telling their younger sister what and what she can't like.

Man, ignorance really is your new best friend.

**Okay, so I may have been a little harsh on my sisters; 'ignoramus’ was a little far. Hah. I guess there are a lot of people out there with their misconceptions on heavy music. But if they don't like it (sadly, sometimes because they don’t give it a chance), then don't go telling other people not to like it as well. And even worse, don't tell them that they themselves don't like it either! That's just not cool, man.

Overall, this rant is not only about my sisters disapproving of my music taste, but also about accepting who you are. Truthfully, if the people around you don’t approve of the things that make you happy, then don’t mind them. Carry on living your life, because after all, it is YOUR life!
